The first number goes above the line; it is called the numerator;
The second number goes below the line; it is called the denominator.

In the example shown here, 13 is the numerator and 36 is the denominator. The fraction is read as “thirteen over thirty-six” or “thirteen thirty-sixths.” What does this fraction represent?

That is 13 divided by 36.

If the denominator is 1, we say "1 unit," or we just say the numerator (5/1 = five units)
If the denominator is 2, we say "half" (1/2 = one half)
If the denominator is 3, we say one-third (1/3 = one-third)
If the denominator is 4, we say one-quarter (1/4 = one-quarter)
If the denominator is greater than 4, we use the ordinal number (1/5 = one-fifth, 5/147 = five-hundred-forty-seventh).

Let’s take the fraction 1/2. It can be read as “1 divided by 2,” “one-half,” or “0.5
” Note that it can also be written with a vertical line instead of a horizontal one: 1 / 2
